In the 1940s, 'statement" costume jewels came into vogue. Wartime rationing of metal had designers creating jewelry from of glass, plastic, bakelite and wood. Fruit themes won immediate popularity and cherries dominated the scene. They clicked together on bracelets, clustered on pins and encircled hats. Cherry bracelets complemented fingernails painted in Cutex's first ever red color.
